Oyinbrakemi Daphne Ezetu: Breaking Barriers in Footwear Design and Aviation.

Oyinbrakemi Daphne Ezetu is redefining the boundaries for what it means to be a multi-skilled entrepreneur, proving to the world that vision, passion, and determination can transcend industry lines. As a footwear designer and aviator, she embodies a unique blend of creativity and dynamism. While others may believe that excelling in a single domain is the key to success, Ezetu has demonstrated the value of utilizing one’s diverse skills. From making exceptional, high-quality shoes to soaring as a flight attendant, she has shattered glass ceilings, defied expectations, and carved out her path.

Her journey into shoe design was not a mistake, but a deliberate pursuit of excellence. In 2017, her life took a transformative turn after an encounter, leading her to change direction. She had purchased a locally made shoe, and soon, her dissatisfaction with the quality sparked an idea to tap into the untapped market of quality, locally made shoes in Nigeria. Seeing this gap, she began by selling well-crafted shoes and carefully curating designs that appealed to her and her growing clientele. However, she eventually realized that being an intermediary was not enough; she needed to create a design that reflected both her personal imagination and creativity.

Ezetu was determined to learn the trade; her passion drove her to seek out expert shoemakers, spending months mastering the intricacies of shoe design and production. It wasn’t an easy journey. Shoemaking was a male-dominated field, and her desire for hands-on training was met with skepticism. However, she refused to be deterred. From her residence in Nigeria, she worked tirelessly, transforming raw materials into exceptional pairs of shoes that showcased her commitment to quality and craftsmanship. Through perseverance and continuous improvement, her small venture has blossomed into a thriving enterprise.

As her name gained recognition, orders for her items surged, overwhelming her. This led to her officially establishing LaurelDaphine Shoes & Footwear, a venture marked by beauty, resilience, and sensibility. Her shoes stood out from factory-produced ones, bearing a history of handiwork, empowerment, and heritage. Her unwavering commitment to quality distinguished her, but navigating Nigeria’s volatile economy was no easy feat. Unstable exchange rates, rising production costs, and erratic availability of raw materials posed ongoing challenges.

Instead of giving in to the economic challenges, Ezetu adapted. She diversified her supply chain, sourced locally quality materials, and built a loyal customer base who valued the uniqueness of her designs. Her company was more than just a shoe retailer; it was a statement of identity and creed, providing people with products that were not only fashionable but also rooted in high-quality craftsmanship.

In 2021, she took a bold step that transformed the course of her life. She relocated to the United Kingdom to pursue a master’s degree but continued to manage her brand remotely. This was not just a learning opportunity but a strategic decision to expand her business into the international market. Her witty mind had recognized that the fashion industry was evolving rapidly, and establishing a presence in a global fashion hub would provide her with exposure to new trends, knowledge, and business development opportunities.

.Relocating to a foreign country while operating an expanding business presented numerous challenges. She had to re-establish connections, navigate the complexities of a new market, and balance academic demands with entrepreneurial responsibilities. Most professionals in her field would have chosen to focus on one path, but Ezetu was able to thrive amidst challenges. In 2022, she embarked on a new venture; aviation. Where she became a flight attendant, a move that led

some to believe she was exiting the business world. However, it was a strategic integration of her passions. For Ezetu, being a flight attendant was not just a career, but more of exposure, stability, and global networking. A role that allowed her to experience new cultures, and also

create a new market for her brand.

Apart from personal success, Ezetu’s experience has inspired several young women who aspire to break glass ceilings in traditionally male-dominated sectors. She is a passionate advocate for skills acquisition, having actively trained and mentored potential female entrepreneurs in shoe craftsmanship. Through her mentorship projects and workshops, she empowers young women to acquire technical expertise and gain confidence in pursuing traditionally male-dominated careers in crafts. Her mission is clear: dispelling stereotypes, promoting economic empowerment and bridging doors of opportunity for future generations of women in different crafts.

Her efforts in the fashion industry have not gone unnoticed. In 2024, she received the

prestigious “Most Versatile Footwear Design Brand” award at the African fashion fiesta.

As she takes her career to the next level, Ezetu’s vision for LaurelDaphine Shoes & Footwear is nothing short of monumental. She is gearing up for the London summer 2025 global launch of her inaugural worldwide collection, a culmination of years of passion, creativity, and determination. Entering the global market poses its own set of challenges, from navigating customer behavior to addressing complexities in cross-border fashion retail. But, Ezetu is ready to face whatever the future holds.

Aside from the London launch, she hopes to have big fashion retailers collaborate with her, expand her product lines to include high-end brands, and sell globally through online platforms. Ezetu’s advice to aspiring entrepreneurs and artists is simple ‘Start Where You Are, Harness Your Unique Talents, And Persistently Strive For Excellence”

Oyinbrakemi Daphne Ezetu is not merely crafting shoes; she is forging a legacy, inspiring a generation, and rewriting the lines of ambition.

Ezetu’s upcoming London collection is poised to make a splash, not just in the UK, but globally in the fashion world.
